Indoor Farmer exists to offer Canadian’s the opportunity to "grow their own" food and medicine. Over the years we have added a large selection of outdoor gardening products to compliment our indoor growing collection.

With that said, I’m married to a woman who puts me to shame with her mechanical maintenance abilities, so after a couple of struggles with changing the oil she now has it down to an art.

The best choice I ever made when it comes to long-term storage food is getting a freeze dryer. I didn’t always think that. It was far more work than I imagined and the maintenance on the machine is annoying when it needs it.

When isolated, the pump seems to behave well. Short of putting a meter on the pump, my impression is that it is operating properly. I'm considering investing in a good meter to verify that it is reaching a good ultimate vacuum.

And once you have resolved your issue I hope you will stay around and talk to us all about what you have been drying in your machine, etc.

Ice is then turned into vapor by applying heat while simultaneously lowering the surrounding pressure during sublimation. During the remaining phase, moisture that is loosely bound is removed in order to bring about sufficient stability for the product to be stored for longer periods of time.  

Trust the machine. It will let you know when it thinks the food is done. Once the cycle has finished, Know More you can check the food to see if it is completely done. If so, you can remove it from the machine and package it. If the food isn’t done, you can add time.

The freeze dried food can be used for everyday eating, camping and of course, long term storage. I freeze dry as much as I can while times are good, I won’t plan to freeze dry if I go off-grid or don’t have electricity.

And therein lies the cons to buying a freeze dryer. It takes time to make them cost effective. Depending on humidity in your area, a single run can take up to two days to complete.

I asked her what she was planning to serve and offered to bring something similar for my son so she wouldn’t have to worry about accommodating him. She said she didn’t want me to have to make food.

In times of crisis or conterraneo disasters, having a stash of freeze-dried meals can be a lifesaver. Your family's safety and well-being are priceless. Not only does a freeze dryer set you up to survive, it lets you control the quality and content of your emergency food supply.

The set up booklet was easy to follow and the initial bread run went smoothly. I do find the touch screen very sensitive and have made a couple taps in error. An error correct button might be helpful. Now the learning curve begins as the food is processed.

I, too, have noticed a significant difference when I defrost mid-cycle. I do that routinely now. I carefully use a heat gun to "shock" the surface of the ice, moving back and forth across it fairly swiftly, which causes it to crack and separate somewhat from the cylinder.
